fundaci\u00f3n del municipio data de la colonizaci\u00f3n espa\u00f1ola. El primer colonizador del estado fue el Capit\u00e1n Don Francisco de Ibarra. Ya en esta \u00e9poca se descubrieron los minerales de Avino, Ind\u00e9 y Cuencam\u00e9, y se fundaron colonias agr\u00edcolas en los m\u00e1rgenes de los r\u00edos. La regi\u00f3n estaba poblada por tribus salvajes, n\u00f3madas y errantes, correspondiendo el lugar a los indios Zacatecas que se extend\u00edan hasta el r\u00edo Nazas y Cuencam\u00e9, al norte; al sur llegaban a lo que corresponde ahora el estado de Michoac\u00e1n. Al oeste limitaban con los tepehuanos que era la tribu m\u00e1s numerosa.
